I was sure no one could get in through the windows because they were all welded shut with decades of paint, so I really concerned myself with the front and back doors.

Because I did not have much to spend, my first home burglar alarm was a set of two self-contained door alarms. They still make these things – they are shaped like rubber doorstops and they go on the floor so that if the door is opened it presses down on a small plate, making the alarm scream out. Not exactly Fort Know – but I never missed any sleep.

When me and my wife got married and actually started to acquire good stuff – as well as a couple children – I fully understood the significance of a real burglar alarm system. In the beginning, like typical young families we had to scrimp and save so our home security system had to be cheap but still provide what I wanted. A few motion detectors focused on entryways, and a little control panel allowed me to secure everything when we left as well as guarding us when we were in bed. Again, nothing fancy but a lot of security.

Now, the children are all grown, but I still have my wife and now we have pretty nice things. The bad economy raised my worries that people might start doing crazy things so I decided another change was in order.
